The recruiting news on Orrville senior LB/RB Mason Monheim took an interesting twist a few weeks ago and it seems now that the Ohio State Buckeyes are back in the picture.
After an impressive showing at Ohio State's camp over the summer (Mason was named one of the camp's MVP's), the thought was that Mason may get an offer from the Buckeyes, but an offer went to another Ohio LB instead, leaving a coveted Buckeye offer a question mark for the foreseeable future for the Red Rider standout.
It was thought that he would look to commit to Illinois (his first offer) before the season began, but a call to Ohio State has put that commitment to Illinois on hold for now.
According to this article (sorry, it's a pay site), Ohio State is expressing renewed interest in Monheim, telling him he's moved up their list of LB recruits and is asking him to hold off on committing to Illinois.
My thoughts...it's nice that he's moved up their board, but without an offer from the Buckeyes, I'd still call Illinois the frontrunner. If Luke Fickell and the Buckeyes don't want him to commit to Illinois, then make him an offer and get in the game.
I think a lot of this depends on whether or not Ohio State loses any scholarships as part of the NCAA punishment to be handed down in another month or so. If they don't lose any, maybe there's one coming Mason's way. If they lose 5-10 scholarships, Ohio State probably won't offer.
Would be nice to see an Ohio St. position coach (or Coach Fickell himself) take in a game at Red Rider Stadium and see Mason with his own eyes....if they truly are serious and not just giving lip service to an Ohio kid who's close to deciding to play his college football outside the state.
These things have a way of taking care of themselves, and I'm sure Mason's focus is on helping the Riders to a 2-0 record this Friday at Triway.
