It's probably one of the two biggest weekends in the Orrville Track season....The Division 2 district track meet at Red Rider Stadium. The other biggie in track season is the Orrville Invite, but since that was rained out this year, the District meet at OHS took on a little added importance this year.
Add in the fact that this would be the final district meet hosted at Orrville for the next two years (due to the upcoming construction of the new high school & parking restrictions caused by it) and it was all the more important for the runners, jumpers & throwers, coaches and supporters of the Orrville track program.
Fortunately, each of the boys and girls teams qualified a number of athletes on to next week's regional meet at Lexington. Read below for links to results and a list of athletes now one step closer to the ultimate goal of appearing at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus at the State Track Meet.
Boys
The boys team finished 4th with 88 team points, just one point behind 3rd place Akron Buchtel. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary won the district with 96 team points, followed by Peninsula Woodridge with 91.66 points, then Buchtel & Orrville rounding out the top 4.
Congrats to the following Red Rider boys who will move on to regionals....
Stewart Turner - 2nd in the 100m (11.18), 1st in Long Jump (20' 6 1/2")
Nathan Rosenbaum - 1st in the 3200m (9:51.81)
Drew Brenner - 1st in the 300m Hurdles (39.53)
J. Zook, D. Brenner, S. Turner, T. Simpson - 2nd in the 4x200m Relay (1:30.56)
Brandon Johnson - 4th in the Pole Vault (11' 6")
Sam Reusser - 1st in Shot Put (52' 11 1/4")
Derek Vance - 2nd in Discus (145' 10")
Good balanced scoring. Riders scored points in 4 field events, 1 relay, 1 distance, a sprint and a hurdle race. They had a real shot to win districts, but as is the case in almost every track meet, it shows how EVERY event is important, and how some points scored are better than none at all.
Girls
The girls finished in 6th place with 63 points, just 1 point out of 5th place. Akron St. V's girls team followed the lead of the boys team and won the district with 96 team points.
Here are the Red Rider girls who will move on to Lexington next week....
Nicole Gregor - 1st in the 100m Hurdles (15.66), 2nd in the 300m Hurdles (47.00)
Rylee Scott - 2nd in the 100m Hurdles (16.08)
Alexa Jarrett - 2nd in the Pole Vault (11' 3")
Maddie Jarrett - 3rd in the Pole Vault (9' 6")
Torie Plough - 4th in the Shot Put (35' 9 3/4")
Alexa Jarrett's effort in the pole vault set a new school record...breaking her old record of 11' even.

That's it. Congrats to the event organizers led by Orrville coaches Jason Ayers and Tyrone Mosley for again putting on a great district meet. I know they hate to see it slip away from Orrville for the next two years. Hopefully the meet returns in 2014 (and hopefully a new track surface is there too).
