Plenty to cover, so let's get at it.....a Big33 recap, a scholar athlete, the upcoming football season, the Wayne Co. Hall of Fame induction, a Rider in the pros, and a "College Rider" reminder.
Away we go.....
Big33 Recap
Orrville All-Ohioans and recent graduates Chase Hoobler and Sam Miller competed in the Big33 Classic in Hershey, PA this past Saturday. Chase and Sam helped the Ohio squad to the 18-15 victory, the 2nd straight win in the series for the Ohio team.
Chase played on defense and Sam played offense, both also contributed on special teams.
Red Rider sideline boss Doug Davault was also an assistant coach for the Ohio team.
It was a week full of activities, banquets and special outings for the players...and one that they won't soon forget.
From all reports, Sam and Chase did more than hold their own against top talent from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Orrville and D-1 powerhouse Cleveland Glenville were the only Ohio teams to have three representatives from one school.
Pictures from the week can be viewed at big33photos.com. A nice gallery here, too. (Pics 8, 27, 31 especially)
OHSAA Scholar Athlete
Another recent gradute was honored by the OHSAA as a scholar athlete. Victor Monheim was one of 53 student-athletes to received the award at a banquet held last week. He was one of 13 students from the Northeast District, and the only one from Wayne County, to be honored. Congrats!!
Fooball Season
According to the state, the first day of actual football coaching cannot take place until August 2nd, but let's not kid ourselves...it's football season. The Riders will have 2 home scrimmages this year, which is a little different than last year....Saturday August 14 versus Minerva (10am) and Friday August 20 (7pm) versus Louisville.
Reason for both being at home this year is because Louisville's stadium is being renovated and their new turf playing surface will not be ready until late August or early September.
Here's the entire schedule....same as last year, just switching home & away.
Johnson Debuts
Rider alum, College of Wooster grad and now professional baseball player Matthew (don't call him Matt) Johnson made his debut at the plate for the Auburn (NY) Doubledays of the NY-Penn League. Auburn is the Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.
He pinch hit and walked, eventually scoring, in his team's 12-0 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Since a walk doesn't count as an at bat, he still has, officialy, zero at-bats....but hey...1.000 on-base percentage is pretty nice.
Best of Luck Matthew. You can follow the team, and Matthew's progress at their official website.
WCSHOF
If you've been reading the Daily Record this week, you've no doubt seen the profiles for the Wayne Co. Sports Hall of Fam induction that's set for this Saturday at Wooster High School. Five Orrville alums will be honored, Kevin Summers, Renauld Ray, Dan Stultz, Stan Becker and Larry Smucker.
The only unfortunate part is that the ceremony coincides with the Orrville All-Class reunion. I'm sure some would love to attend both, but wont be able to.
College Riders Reminder
We've got a good list of Orrville alums playing college sports, but it's only as good as the info I have. Please review the list and contact me with any additions. Thanks.
